The Question That Matters: Is India's Demographic Dividend Dead in the Age of AI?

This is Part 1 of a three-part series examining whether India's demographic dividend, once considered its greatest economic asset, is turning into a liability in the age of AI. Part 2 exploring other economies and Part 3 with opportunities to follow.

India has 800 million people under the age of 35. A median age of 28. Roughly 1.5 million engineering graduates and 3 million total graduates entering the workforce every year. A working-age population projected to peak at 68.9% by 2030.

On paper, this is the greatest concentration of human potential any economy has ever assembled. Economists call it the "demographic dividend" that once-in-a-civilisation window where a young, productive population outnumbers its dependents and can drive explosive economic growth.

Japan had this window. So did South Korea, China, and the East Asian Tigers. Each converted it into decades of prosperity.

India's window is open right now. But there's a problem no one in the dividend cheerleading squad wants to talk about.

The demographic dividend doesn't work if the people can't work.

The Unemployment Illusion

India's official unemployment rate hovers around 5.1–5.2%. Reassuring, until you look beneath the surface. CMIE reported 7.6% in October 2025, and as high as 8.5% in mid-2025. Youth unemployment for ages 15–29 runs at approximately 14.9%, with female youth unemployment at 16.3% (PLFS 2025). Independent CMIE estimates for ages 20–24 are a staggering 44–45%. Youth account for 83% of India's total unemployed (India Employment Report 2024, ILO-IHD).

The paradox: the more educated India's young people become, the more unemployed they become. The share of educated youth among total unemployed nearly doubled, from 35.2% in 2000 to 65% in 2022. Graduate unemployment at 13% is three to five times higher than in advanced economies. In Kerala, female youth unemployment reaches 44%. India's Labour Force Participation Rate sits at just 52% versus China's 76%; the female LFPR at a dismal 37% versus 70% (India Employment Report 2024).

The Credential Factory

India produces 1.5 million engineering graduates annually. Yet 83% from the Class of 2024 received zero job or internship offers (Unstop Talent Report 2025). IIT placement rates fell from 90.4% to 80.3% in two years. Only 43% of graduates are job-ready (Mercer-Mettl 2025). 93% of students know only 7 career paths out of 20,000+. Only 7% receive formal career guidance. 65% pursue misaligned degrees. IT services fresher hiring collapsed from 600,000 to under 150,000 between 2022 and 2024.

We are producing qualifications. We are not producing qualified people.

And Then AI Enters the Room

All of this was already a crisis in slow motion. AI has turned it into one in fast-forward.

Here's what makes this moment different from every previous technology transition: AI doesn't just automate manual labour, it automates cognitive entry-level work. The very roles that absorbed millions of India's graduates over the past two decades, BPO, data entry, routine IT support, basic accounting, customer service, back-office operations, are precisely the tasks that large language models and agentic AI systems are designed to replace.

The ServiceNow-Pearson 2025 Workforce Skills Report estimates that agentic AI will redefine 10.35 million Indian jobs in the next five years. McKinsey projects that 70% of Indian jobs could be impacted by automation by 2030. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that globally, AI and new technologies will create 170 million new jobs by 2030, but displace 92 million.

That's a net positive globally. But the gains flow to those with the right skills. The losses fall on those without them.

In India, 63 out of every 100 workers will require training by 2030. But 12 out of every 100, translating to more than 70 million workers, are unlikely to receive the training they need (WEF Future of Jobs 2025).

Run the numbers. India adds 3 million graduates a year. A third are unemployed or underemployed. 83% of engineers can't find work. 65% pursued degrees misaligned with market demand. Only 43% are job-ready by any employer's measure. AI is about to automate the entry-level rungs that were supposed to absorb them. And only 25% of Indian enterprises have successfully integrated AI into their operations (ServiceNow Enterprise AI Maturity Index).

The demographic dividend isn't converting. It's compressing. 800 million young people don't become an economic asset simply by existing. Without the right skills, the right guidance, and the right development infrastructure, they become the world's largest pool of unfulfilled potential.

Or worse: a source of structural frustration.

The Question That Matters

So is the demographic dividend dead?

Not necessarily. But it needs a fundamentally different playbook than the one India has been running for the past two decades.

Companies in Japan are going bankrupt not because of bad strategy, but because there's literally no one to hire. And that creates an enormous opening for India — if we play it right.
